Trier University of Applied Sciences is the largest University of Rheinland-Pfalz county. Their off-location environmental campus in Birkenfeld offers more than just studies. Similar to the American student's life it combines study courses, living and working all at one location. Following the Campus' comittment to environmental housing, the buildings are heated with recyclable energy (electricity and heating) from a local co-generation power station, a unique University initiative in Germany. At the two on-site faculties – environmental economics/law and environmental planning/engineering – students work in multidisciplinary and project - orientated groups. Many students already start working on research projects in their first terms which enables them to also gather practical working experiences. From this background, many alumnies have already created their own business while studying.

The Birkenfeld Campus uses Caché in several student projects of their studies in environmental economics. In the process of the Bologna protocol, reorganisation might promote Caché into the Masters program.
